Po žanru je drama, a predstavlja adaptaciju istoimenog teatarskog komada Tennesseeja Williamsa. Protagonist, koga tumači Paul Newman, je Chance Wayne, mladi "pratilac" ocvale hollywoodske zvijezde Alexandre De Lago (čiji lik tumači Geraldine Page), koji zajedno sa njom dolazi u svoj rodni grad na Floridi te koristi priliku da potajno obnovi vezu sa svojom bivšom djevojkom Heavenly Finley (čiji lik tumači Shirley Knight). Radnja prikazuje kako to izaziva bijes njenog oca (čiji lik tumači Ed Begley, lokalnog političkog moćnika, koji ne bira sredstva ne bi li Waynea istjerao iz grada. Sweet Bird of Youth se razlikovao od predloška, dijelom zbog toga što su neki "problematični" sadržaji (uključujući kastraciju) izbačeni kako bi se uskladili sa tadašnjim cenzorskim kodeksom), dijelom zato što je film dobio hepi end. Najviše je priznanja dobila Geraldine Page, koja je za svoj nastup nagrađena Oscarom za najbolju sporednu glumicu.
