De vrouwenafdeling van Olympique Lyonnais is een damesvoetbalclub uit Lyon die uitkomt in de Division 1, de hoogste Franse damescompetitie. De club is opgericht in 1970, maar speelt pas sinds 2004 onder de naam Olympique Lyonnais. Ze wonnen reeds 15 keer de landstitel. De club won in 2011, 2012, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 en 2022 de Champions League. In 2010 en 2013 was de ploeg verliezend finalist. Thuiswedstrijden worden afgewerkt in het Plaine des Jeux in Gerland, dat een capaciteit heeft van 2.200 plaatsen. De club heeft vele bijnamen zoals La Reine en Les Fenottes. Op de UEFA-ranglijst van de beste damesclubs in Europa stond Olympique Lyonnais op 29 augustus 2021 op de tweede plaats.[1]
Geschiedenis
Ontstaan
De vrouwenvoetbalclub uit Lyon werd opgericht in 1970, als onderdeel van de voetbalclub FC Lyon. Pas in 2004 werd de vrouwenafdeling gebonden aan Olympique Lyonnais.
Eerste successen
Sindsdien wonnen de OL Ladies in 2007 en 2008 het landskampioenschap en tevens het bekertoernooi in 2008. In de UEFA Women's Cup groeit Lyon al snel uit tot een smaakmaker. Belangrijke aankopen waren de Franse middenvelder Louisa Nécib (in 2007) en de Zweedse aanvaller Lotta Schelin (in 2008), ook wel beschouwd als de Zidane en de Van Basten van het vrouwenvoetbal.[2] Op Europees niveau behaald Lyon in het seizoen 2007/08 de halve finale, maar wordt uitgeschakeld na 2 gelijkspellen (1-1 en 0-0) tegen Umeå IK. In de 18-koppige selectie, spelen er anno mei 2012 elf speelsters voor het Frans vrouwenelftal.
