De Ashuanipi, die uitmondt in het Smallwood Reservoir, wordt echter als de bovenloop van de Churchill beschouwd. Tezamen hebben de rivieren (inclusief hun stroomafstand doorheen het Smallwood Reservoir) een lengte van 856 km, de langste rivierlengte in Atlantisch Canada.
