Inisiatif Pertahanan Strategik (SDI) ialah sistem pertahanan peluru berpandu yang dicadangkan untuk melindungi Amerika Syarikat dari serangan oleh senjata nuklear strategik balistik (peluru berpandu balistik antara benua dan peluru berpandu balistik yang dilancarkan kapal selam). Konsep ini pertama kali diumumkan secara terbuka oleh Presiden Ronald Reagan pada 23 Mac, 1983.^[1] Reagan ialah pengkritik vokal doktrin pemusnahan mutual yakin (MAD), yang digambarkan sebagai "perjanjian bunuh diri", dan dia menyeru saintis dan jurutera Amerika Syarikat untuk membangunkan sistem yang akan menyebabkan senjata nuklear usang.^[2]^[3]^[4]^[5]
