The Kanchanjunga Express is an Express train belonging to Eastern Railway zone that runs between Sealdah (Kolkata) and Agartala in India. It is currently operated with 13173/13174 train numbers on a four-days-a-week basis.[1][2]

It is named after the Kangchenjunga peak of the Himalayan Mountains of Sikkim which is visible from New Jalpaiguri, as previously when this train was introduced in the 1960s it was between Sealdah and New Jalpaiguri (Siliguri).

Timings

  • 13173/Kanchanjunga Express departs Sealdah every Tuesday,Thursday,Friday and Sunday at 06:35 hrs and reaches Agartala at 17:55 hrs the next day.
  • 13174/Kanchanjunga Express departs Agartala every Tuesday,Thursday,Saturday and Sunday at 08:05 hrs and reaches Sealdah at 19:25 hrs the next day.

Sealdah Agartala Kanchanjunga Express is hauled by WAP-7 or WAP-4 Locomotive of Electric Loco Shed, Howrah or Sealdah- from Sealdah till Jagiroad. Then the train is hauled by Diesel Loco Shed, Siliguri-based WDP-4B Locomotive from Jagiroad till Agartala. A banker is usually attached between Lumding and Badarpur.

Accident

On 17 June 2024, around 9:00 IST a goods train collided with Kanchanjunga Express from the rear end resulting in the derailment of three coaches. Ten people lost their lives in the incident while more than 60 people got injured. The cause of collision is currently under investigation.[3]
