Sanjay Mittal is a Professor of computational fluid dynamics in the Department of Aerospace Engineering at Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, India.[1]
Early life and education
After doing his B.Tech. from IIT Kanpur in 1988, he got enrolled at University of Minnesota, Twin Cities for M.S. program. He then received his Ph.D. and worked as a research associate under Tayfun Tezduyar.
Career
After working for two years at Army High Performance Computing center he returned to India and joined IIT Kanpur in the year of 1994 as an assistant professor.
Derogatory remarks against fellow colleague
Professor Subrahmanyam Saderla a Dalit by caste, an alumnus of IIT-Kanpur and a junior colleague of Mittal, filed a complaint with the IIT Kanpur authorities that he has been constantly harassed by Four professors of IIT Kanpur on caste basis and Mittal was one of them.[2] An inquiry was initiated and found the allegations to be true. Subsequent action recommended demotion of Mittal.[3] An FIR was also filed against Mittal. The NCSC (National Commission for Scheduled Castes) recommended strict legal action against Mittal and 3 others. Accusations against IIT Kanpur for caste based discrimination have been there in media though IIT Kanpur authorities have rubbished all such allegations. Professor Manindra Agrawal who is the present Deputy Director of IIT Kanpur, and was the Officiating Director when Dr. Saderla was hired has given a detailed account of the events that unfolded ever since the seminar job talk of Dr. Saderla. Dr. Saderla has given an interview about the case, which is published on YouTube.

Mittal has been the recipient of various awards.
