The Parti Bersatu Rakyat Malaysia (BERSAMA) is a political party in Malaysia. Originally known as Parti Demokratik Setiahati Kuasa Rakyat Bersatu Sabah (SETIA), the party changed its name after it extended to Peninsular Malaysia on 23 March 2011.[1][2]

History

The Malaysia United People's Party or ( BEERSAMA) formerly known as the United Sabah People's Power Democratic Party (SETIA), is a political party in Malaysia. SETIA was founded in 1994 by Shuhaiddin Langkap in the state of Sabah. Despite its Bumiputera-centric platform, membership was open to all ethnicities, and its leadership included representatives from various communities. The party contested as the opposition in Sabah state elections. SETIA rebranded as BERSAMA on March 23, 2011, expanding its reach to the peninsular region. In 2023, party leadership made significant changes, including restructuring the leadership. This included a re-election of top leaders through appointments and elections, as many original leaders not only lost confidence in the then-president, Nazry Roy, but also left the party entirely, no longer fully engaging with BERSAMA.[3][4]

Expulsion of Shuhaiddin Langkap from BERSAMA

The expulsion of Shuhaiddin Langkap from BERSAMA occurred between October and November 2023. This action was initiated by then-president Nazry Roy following discussions with Langkap. It was determined that Langkap would immediately cease to be a member of the party due to several complaints alleging that his conduct tarnished the party's reputation, including allegations of improper solicitation of both public and private funds. An agreement between Langkap and party leadership facilitated this decision. Consequently, Langkap forfeited any authority or permission to engage in party matters. Langkap's expulsion underscored significant issues within BERSAMA's leadership. Since the founding of the party, Langkap's leadership had been seen as being marred by failures to guide the party in the right direction. His expulsion was seen by supporters as a turning point for BERSAMA that signaled a renewed commitment to integrity and ethical conduct within the party.[5]

Danial as the new President of BERSAMA

Danial Bin Marnokaran Abdullah was chosen as the new President of BERSAMA through an Emergency Meeting held in December 2023. His appointment signified a pivotal moment for the party, as he was seemingly tasked with revitalizing BERSAMA's presence in the Malaysian political arena.[6][7]
